GST Registration: When Is It Mandatory?

Registration is generally required once turnover crosses ₹40 lakh for goods or ₹20 lakh for services.

Registration thresholds (₹ lakh)
40 Goods 20 Services

GST registration becomes compulsory when your aggregate turnover crosses the threshold: ₹40 lakh for suppliers of goods and ₹20 lakh for suppliers of services (₹20 lakh / ₹10 lakh respectively in special-category states).

  • Inter-state supply, e-commerce sales, and casual/non-resident taxable persons require registration regardless of turnover.
  • Voluntary registration is allowed and lets you claim input tax credit.
  • Operating without required registration attracts penalties and denial of credit.
