Capital Gains on Shares & Mutual Funds (FY 2024-25)

For listed equity, short-term gains are taxed at 20% and long-term gains at 12.5% above a ₹1.25 lakh exemption.

Following the July 2024 Budget, capital gains on listed equity shares and equity mutual funds are taxed as:

  • Short-term (held up to 12 months) — 20%.
  • Long-term (held over 12 months) — 12.5%, with the first ₹1.25 lakh of long-term gains each year exempt.

Debt mutual funds and other assets follow different rules and holding periods. Rates and holding periods change with each Budget, so confirm the position for your specific asset and year.

This is general information, not professional advice — confirm the current position for your specific case before acting.
